Quilt Guild Glossary

Block of the month-a purchased quilt block or kit to make one a month

Fat Quarter:  A half-yard cut of fabric cut apart on the fold to be 18”x20” (rather than the 9”x40” size of a standard quarter-yard cut).

Fat Quarter Bingo:  Bingo that uses fat quarters as prizes.  Usually played at one of the Guild’s spring meetings.

Featherweight:  A black, small and light weight portable Singer sewing machine, made in the early to mid-1900’s.

Friendship Quilt:  A quilt that is made for donation to a deserving individual or group.

Name tag:  The mini one-block quilt kit given to new members to make up and personalize with their name.  Should be worn at meetings, and entitles the wearer to enter the name tag raffle.

Name Tag Raffle:  Each member wearing their name tag at a meeting is given a raffle ticket and entered in a drawing for gifts at that meeting.

New Member Tea/Meeting:  A specific program, usually at the May meeting, to honor new members that joined the Guild in the past year.

Newsletter:  A publication sent to members four times a year with information about the Guild and Guild activities.

Program:  A quilting-related presentation or activity at the Guild meeting for the education/entertainment of the members.

Quilt Show:  An annual event - Harvest of Quilts - put on by the Guild to feature members’ work of the past year.  (Go to the end of this glossary to see Quilt Show Terms.)

Raffle block:  A focus fabric and/or pattern provided at one Guild meeting to be made and returned the next meeting.  Each person returning a block is entered in a drawing for some or all of the blocks.

Retreat:  A day or a weekend gathering for purposes of quilting, fun, food, and fellowship.  Share ideas and assist each other with projects.

Round Robin:  A small group of guild members, meeting on a regular basis,  with similar interests in a some particular area of quilting, such as appliqué, embroidery, crazy quilting, etc..

Sew-in:            Quilters gather for several hours to “power quilt”.

Show and Tell:  A time at the Guild meeting for members to show their latest quilting projects.

Sunshine Person:  A Guild volunteer who sends cards of encouragement, support, sympathy, congratulations, etc. to other members. 

UFO:  Unfinished object.

Quilt Show Terms

Boutique:   The Guild’s store at the Quilt Show – new & used quilting-related items donated by Guild members.

Challenge Fabric:  A piece of fabric with a theme and/or instructions for purposes of being incorporated into an entry in the Guild Challenge category of the next year’s quilt show.

Live Demonstrations:  Presentation of quilting techniques, items, and products by Guild members and vendors.

Silent Demonstrations:  Project work done by Guild members in the quilt exhibit areas – an informal show and tell.

White Glove Ladies:  Chaperones for the Quilt Show that enforce the “no touch” rule for visitors.  Offers white gloves to those who want to handle the quilts.
